Short answer: after a professional hot water extraction clean and high-powered turbo drying, most carpets are dry in 2–4 hours. Thicker carpets, cold or damp weather and poor ventilation can make it longer; a warm, airy room makes it quicker.
Why professionally cleaned carpets dry quickly
Hot water extraction rinses the carpet and then extracts the water straight back out with powerful suction, so only a small amount of moisture is left in the fibres. That’s very different from hiring a machine from the supermarket, where weaker suction often leaves carpets wet for a day or more – which is when musty smells and mould can start.
We then use high-powered turbo drying, which moves a large volume of air across the carpet to speed up drying. Pet stain treatments use more moisture and solution than a standard clean, so we allow extra drying time for those.
What affects drying time?
- Carpet type and thickness – deep-pile and wool carpets hold more moisture than short, synthetic pile.
- Ventilation – fresh air moving through the room is the single biggest help.
- Temperature and humidity – a cold, damp day in winter slows things down.
- How soiled the carpet was – heavily soiled areas may need more rinsing.
Five ways to help your carpets dry faster
- Open windows and internal doors to get air moving.
- Put the heating on low in colder months.
- Use a fan pointed across the carpet if you have one.
- Keep pets and children off the carpet until it’s dry.
- Leave furniture feet on the protective pads or foil we put down until the carpet is fully dry.
Can I walk on it straight away?
You can walk on it carefully in clean socks, but avoid outdoor shoes until it’s fully dry – damp fibres pick up dirt more easily. If you need your floors back almost immediately, for example in an office or shop, ask us about low-moisture dry carpet cleaning.
